American Legion Auxiliary Installs New Officers

New officers elected for the year 2008-2009 are:  Janice MacLeod, President; Carol Mathis, Vice President; Vivian Day, Secretary/Treasurer; and Novie Fero, Chaplain and Historian.  In a ceremony in July 2008, Martha Corriher, Past President, Department of North Carolina, installed the new Auxiliary Officers.

Meetings are held monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Town Council Chambers of the Harrisburg Town Hall.

Harrisburg Unit #523  Presidents Report for Period July 2007 – June 2008

 

July

We started off the year by entering a float in 4th of July Parade. We won third place and had lots of fun doing it.

 

September

We had our annual picnic with the Legion at Harrisburg Park (September 22) where we had 3 new members to join.

Several ladies attended the Division 4 meeting in New Salem (September 29)

Hosted Sunday Afternoon Bingo at VA Hospital  (September 9)

 

November

Assisted with providing lunch for the Veterans Day Program at Boys' Club in Concord

Assisted the Post with a Flag Retirement Ceremony November 10

Visited the veteran's at the local Nursing Home

 

December

Donated to the Gift Bag project

Made donation for refreshments for the VAMC Open House

Participated in the Gift Bag Distribution

Prepared 175 Gift bags for Residents at the VAMC and NC Veteran's Home and local Nursing Homes

Held a Christmas Party-Bingo for Sunday afternoon VAMC veterans

Donated a DVD Player and 250 Western DVDs to the NC Veteran's Home

Involved the schools with Veterans gift bags and cards decorations

 

February

Girls State applications to the 3 High Schools in our area

New Member Installation

Donated money to the Veterans Art Festival

Donated to the President's Hospice Program at Salisbury VAMC

 

March

Hosted Sunday Afternoon Bingo at VA Hospital 

 

April

Hosted a Girls State Orientation

 

Other Items:

Supported the Department President's project by selling Patriotic Tote Bags

Continued to collect pull-tabs to support the Durham Ronald MacDonald House

Continued to collect used printer cartridges as a fundraiser to support Auxiliary activities

Donated Veterans' Day DVDs and the Flag Etiquette DVDs to the local elementary school libraries

Donated radios and pillows to VAMC

Community Service: Meals on Wheels, USO volunteers, Blood donors

Mission:
 
*To support the American Legion and its programs for veterans, young people and community.

*To ensure, as volunteers, that Auxiliary members continue to promote all that is good in the nation today, tomorrow and for generations to come through serving others first and not self.
 
Auxiliary Purpose:
Associate with the American Legion and support the work of the world's largest veterans' organization.
Uphold the law of the land and defend the principles of democracy.
X-plain and guard the basic freedoms of religion and expression.
Instill a sense of obligation to the community, state and nation.
Leaders in education for young people.
Implement numerous community efforts and programs to assist families and children across the nation.
Assist our nation's veterans through legislation, funding and volunteerism.
Raise awareness of patriotism and devotion to country.
Year-round participation and dedication to service, not self. 
 
Eligibility --   You can join if you are: 
*A woman who is eligible for membership in The American Legion.
*The mother, wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter, great-granddaughter or grandmother of members of The American Legion and deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during the listed war periods.  Step-relatives are also eligible.
    April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918 (World War I)
    December 7, 1941 - August 15, 1945 Merchant Marines (only eligibility)
    December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946 (World War II)
    June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955 (Korean War)
    February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
    August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984 (Grenada/Lebanon)
    December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990 (Panama)
    August 2, 1990 to cessation of hostilities (Persian Gulf)
 
History:   American Legion Auxuiliary Unit 523 was formed in January 2005 and immediately began its service to Post 523 and the community.  Recent activities and accomplisments during the Unit's first year have included:
