2009 Department Convention Brings Honors for
Harrisburg Auxiliary Members:
Vivian Day, a charter member of Harrisburg Unit #523, was chosen as "Member of the Year" at Department Convention in June 2009. Vivian is shown with the plaque which was awarded to her for this outstanding designation. Novie Fero, a charter member of Harrisburg Unit #523 has
served as
Chaplain/Historian since the Unit's inception. Novie's scrapbook
won
First Place in the Scrapbook competition at Department Convention
2009. Novie is shown with the plaque awarded for this top honor.
Janice MacLeod, a member of Harrisburg's Auxiliary since its
inception was elected as Division IV President for the Department of North Carolina for the
year 2009-2010. (See next picture, Janice is on the left)
Girl's State 2009
Detoria Roelle of Harrisburg was sponsored by Unit #523 to
the
Girl's State Session held in June 2009. Detoria was elected
Governor
-- quite a distinction! In this photo, you can see that she and
Janice
MacLeod were quite happy at the Closing Ceremonies.
Christmas Project:
In December, Auxiliary members along with Post members
collected
goods for their annual Christmas Project. Various toiletry items,
socks, hats, t-shirts along with various other goodies were packed
into
200 gift bags which were distributed to veterans at the State
Veterans Nursing Home, the Salisbury VA Medical Center,
Carillon Assisted Living in Harrisburg,
and The Oaks Nursing Home in Harrisburg. Members took forward to
this
project each year and are always grateful for the opportunity to share
joy among our hospitalized veterans. (see image 1021)

American Legion and support the work of the world's largest veterans'
organization.

the land and defend the principles of democracy.
X-plain and guard
the basic freedoms of religion and expression.
Instill a sense of
obligation to the community, state and nation.
Leaders in
education for young people.
Implement numerous
community efforts and programs to assist families and children across
the nation.
Assist
our nation's veterans through legislation, funding and volunteerism.
Raise awareness of
patriotism and devotion to country.
Year-round
participation and dedication to service, not self.
Eligibility -- You
can join if you are:
*A woman who is eligible for membership in The American
Legion.
*The mother, wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter,
great-granddaughter or grandmother of members of The American Legion
and deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces
during the listed war periods. Step-relatives are also eligible.

History: American
Legion Auxuiliary Unit 523 was formed in January 2005 and immediately
began its service to Post 523 and the community. Recent
activities and accomplisments during the Unit's first year have
included:
